Gamers Who Give: Meet Nate
Welcome back to our "Gamers Who Give" series, where we showcase members of our community who embody the spirit of gaming for good. Today, we're excited to introduce you to Nate, a longtime supporter of Gamers Engaged and a true renaissance man in the gaming world.
Nate has been a part of The Gauntlet almost since its inception, captaining both corporate teams (PopCap) and community teams (Wandering Monsters). His diverse background as a stellar board and video game designer, former professional Magic: The Gathering player, and active philanthropist makes him a shining example of the multifaceted individuals who make up the Gamers Engaged community.
We sat down with Nate to explore his experiences with The Gauntlet, his career in game design, and his views on gaming for good. His insights offer a unique perspective on the intersection of competitive gaming, game design, and philanthropy. Let's dive into our conversation!
Why do you keep coming back to the Gauntlet year after year?
My favorite kind of giving is the type that I know will make a meaningful impact to individuals. The Gauntlet focuses on local charities and causes that I personally empathize with. Also, I'm a sucker for competitive board gaming. I regularly compete in board game tournaments so the Gauntlet feels really in my wheelhouse.
What's your favorite Gauntlet memory?
Hmm so many to choose from! I think my favorite was running around doing puzzles for the Gauntlet Odyssey finale created by Natalie and Summer of Locurio, a local escape room. They are super talented and even played the role of the Oracle who set the teams on their quest. Aside from board games, puzzling is another great love of mine, and this just got peanut butter in my chocolate!
Lyla shared you design games for a living - what's been your favorite project to work on and why?
I've got a few ringers to choose from... Plants vs Zombies: Heroes, Dominion Seaside/Prosperity, and Magic: the Gathering... But I have to say that Red Dragon Inn: Battle for Greyport holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the first big games that I felt like I could trace the majority of the design back to my own hands. If you enjoy co-op deckbuilders, check it out!
What game are you currently playing that you can't stop? Why?
Through the Ages: a New Story of Civilization. I've been playing TTA for years and it's always exciting, interesting, and deep. Vladaa is probably the best board game designer of our age. He has such range and depth to his work. Aside from that, D&D and Magic will always keep me coming back.
If you were an in-game character - what game and what role would you play?
I would totally want to be a Through the Ages leader! Now I am compelled to design one. Maybe an Age III Leader that says "Wars with you are determined with culture production rather than military strength."
Why are you a fan of Gamer's Engaged?
Because there is a lot of latent energy and goodwill in the Seattle gaming community and local game companies. It takes an organization like Gamer's Engaged to provide a structure that we can easily focus on. Without it, all of this gaming goodwill would go to waste.
What's your alignment?
Chaotic Good. My job as a game designer is to make the rules, but it means I also am excited to tear them down when there are better ways.
As we continue to grow and expand our impact, it's individuals like Nate who inspire us and remind us of the incredible potential within the gaming community. Whether it's through participating in events, designing games that bring people together, or supporting local charities, every contribution helps us further our mission of using gaming as a force for good.
